Alleppey Snake Boat Race
The world famous snake boat race which is popularly known as “Nehru Trophy Boat Race” for the year 2013 will be held on 10th August 2013 at Punnamada Backwaters, Alleppey. This is held regularly on the second Saturday of August every year. Tourists, Travel agents, Photographers, Media Persons etc from all over the world visit Alleppey during this boat race. This is indeed a spectacle to watch. The race of the snake boats which is popularly known as “Chundan Vallams” happens in an electrifying atmosphere full of thrill, music, songs associated with the land, team spirit and most importantly the tradition and culture of Kerala. Snake boat race and backwater resources are the most wonderful attractions of Alleppey tourism.
Alleppey boat race is a high spirited boat race event which boost up all state of gratification to its audience. Viewing the Alleppey boat race is more than a frivolous amusement which sheer perfect sensual gratification to the tourists.
Chundan Vallams ranges from 100 to150 feet in length with the rear portion raising to a height above 20 feet. The boat resembles a snake and can accommodate 100 to 150 person on board depending upon its capacity. There will be singers on board to motivate the rowers. Special boat songs of high literary quality filled with musical charm composed in such a manner to increase the momentum of rowing in a unified manner will be sung by the musical team on board.
There will temporary galleries made for the people to sit and watch the boat race. Permanent gallery is already there at the finishing point of the boat race. Alleppey backwaters will be crowded with all types of boats ( House Boats, Motor Boats, Shikaras etc ) with tourists on board to get a glimpse of the race live and enjoy the occasion.
